·         Transmission Assets

§         For an investment holding company, Beacon Energy analyzed a wide variety of merchant transmission opportunities based on selected parameters.  The top ten opportunities were analyzed by evaluating existing transmission tariffs, locational pricing due to transmission constraints, competitive generation alternatives and load consumption patterns.

§         For a group of companies interested in advancing competitive transmission, Beacon Energy served as a facilitator for FERC filings congressional discussions, and press relations.

·        Project Restructuring

§         For an investment company, Beacon Energy replaced a power off-take contract by soliciting expressions of interest from 18 power marketers and load serving entities. The solicitation involved the initial contact, project presentations, and negotiations. In addition to the power sales and fuel analysis, Beacon Energy built financial models to assess the impact of various power sales alternatives and to insure the financial attractiveness of the final negotiated structure.

§         For a financial institution, Beacon Energy analyzed project contracts and forward market conditions.  Based on these analyses, the staff recommended an energy management plan consistent with protecting debt.  Risks were analyzed and an energy management plan acceptable to lenders was prepared.

·         Market and Price Forecasting

§         For a major energy company, Beacon Energy forecasted power prices in the Southeast, Midwest, and the Eastern United States.  These price forecasts involved the coordination within the company of various departments of the firm including power trading, strategic planning, asset ownership, asset development, and finance. Beacon Energy used proprietary gas, coal and electricity forecasting models to complete the analysis.

·         Energy Buying

§         For a major industrial, Beacon Energy conducted a supply solicitation for a new energy supply contract.  Beacon Energy prepared an RFP, contacted over 20 potential suppliers, obtained letters of intent, analyzed the leading offers, negotiated key terms and the final contracts, and helped the client obtain cost savings on a multi-year supply contract.

§         For a major industrial, Beacon Energy evaluated on-site generation at various sites, compared the cost of new generation to the cost of supply proposals, and forecasted power and gas prices to assist the industrial in making the optimum decision.

·         Project Implementation Assistance

§         For a large asset developer, Beacon Energy provided implementation assistance in the development of an “F” class generating station.  Beacon Energy worked closely with the client to secure transmission paths, negotiate off-take power sales, and arrange pipeline transportation and fuel supply.  In addition, Beacon Energy assisted the client with obtaining project financing and designing an energy management plan.

·         Development and Acquisition Assistance

§         For a large integrated energy company, Beacon Energy identified two power asset development opportunities.  Our staff prepared forward curve analyses, linked future power prices to gas supply, and designed a development strategy for these assets.  One asset opportunity was an acquisition from an established asset owner.  The other project was a greenfield merchant plant.

§         For a power developer, Beacon Energy supported the development of new coal-fired generating assets. The work involved spark spread analysis, power price projections, fuel price projections, market evaluations, site selection, transmission analysis, interconnection requests, financial projections, as well as discussions with private equity firms and strategic investors.

·         Market Research

§         On behalf of a major turbine EPC contractor, Beacon Energy conducted an analysis of a new North American business opportunity.  As part of our work, Beacon Energy researched the relevant market, created a preliminary product design, targeted sample customers, developed a survey instrument, conducted on-site and telephone interviews, tabulated and analyzed the results, and designed a preliminary marketing implementation strategy.  Key to our work was Beacon Energy’s understanding of critical energy issues.  The product’s target market represents $1.5 billion in potential future annual sales.

§         Beacon Energy evaluated the competitive standing of a wholesale energy marketer against its peer group.  Customer relationships, sources of power supply, power products, and financial performance were all subjects of evaluation.  The overall effectiveness of competitors was determined from the benchmarking exercise.

§         For a major utility, Beacon Energy conducted market research on several potential opportunities for new business.  Several of these were new product opportunities, however others involved new service offerings or the expansion of current businesses.
