Assets
§
For an investment holding company,
Beacon Energy analyzed a wide variety of merchant transmission opportunities
based on selected parameters. The top ten opportunities were analyzed by
evaluating existing transmission tariffs, locational pricing due to
transmission constraints, competitive generation alternatives and load
consumption patterns.
§
For a group of
companies interested in advancing competitive transmission, Beacon Energy
served as a facilitator for FERC filings congressional discussions, and
press relations.

Project Restructuring
§
For an investment company, Beacon
Energy replaced a power off-take contract by soliciting expressions of
interest from 18 power marketers and load serving entities. The solicitation
involved the initial contact, project presentations, and negotiations. In
addition to the power sales and fuel analysis, Beacon Energy built financial
models to assess the impact of various power sales alternatives and to
insure the financial attractiveness of the final negotiated structure.

For a financial institution, Beacon Energy
analyzed project contracts and forward market conditions. Based on these
analyses, the staff recommended an energy management plan consistent with
protecting debt. Risks were analyzed and an energy management plan
acceptable to lenders was prepared.

Market
and Price Forecasting
§
For a major energy company, Beacon
Energy forecasted power prices in the Southeast, Midwest, and the Eastern
United States. These price forecasts involved the coordination within the
company of various departments of the firm including power trading,
strategic planning, asset ownership, asset development, and finance. Beacon
Energy used proprietary gas, coal and electricity forecasting models to
complete the analysis.

Energy
Buying
§
For a major industrial, Beacon
Energy conducted a supply solicitation for a new energy supply contract.
Beacon Energy prepared an RFP, contacted over 20 potential suppliers,
obtained letters of intent, analyzed the leading offers, negotiated key
terms and the final contracts, and helped the client obtain cost savings on
a multi-year supply contract.

For a major industrial, Beacon
Energy evaluated on-site generation at various sites,
compared the cost of new generation to the cost of supply proposals, and
forecasted power and gas prices to assist the industrial in making the
optimum decision.

Project Implementation Assistance
§
For a large asset developer,
Beacon Energy provided implementation assistance in the development of an
“F” class generating station. Beacon Energy worked closely with the client
to secure transmission paths, negotiate off-take power sales, and arrange
pipeline transportation and fuel supply. In addition, Beacon Energy
assisted the client with obtaining project financing and designing an energy
management plan.

Development and Acquisition Assistance
§
For a large
integrated energy company, Beacon Energy identified two power asset
development opportunities. Our staff prepared forward curve analyses,
linked future power prices to gas supply, and designed a development
strategy for these assets. One asset opportunity was an acquisition from an
established asset owner. The other project was a greenfield merchant plant.
§
For a power
developer, Beacon Energy supported the development of new coal-fired
generating assets. The work involved spark spread analysis, power price
projections, fuel price projections, market evaluations, site selection,
transmission analysis, interconnection requests, financial projections, as
well as discussions with private equity firms and strategic investors.

Market Research
§
On behalf of a major turbine EPC contractor, Beacon Energy conducted an
analysis of a new North American business opportunity. As part of our work,
Beacon Energy researched the relevant market, created a preliminary product
design, targeted sample customers, developed a survey instrument, conducted
on-site and telephone interviews, tabulated and analyzed the results, and
designed a preliminary marketing implementation strategy. Key to our work
was Beacon Energy’s understanding of critical energy issues. The product’s
target market represents $1.5 billion in potential future annual sales.
§
Beacon Energy evaluated the competitive standing of a wholesale energy
marketer against its peer group. Customer relationships, sources of power
supply, power products, and financial performance were all subjects of
evaluation. The overall effectiveness of competitors was determined from
the benchmarking exercise.
§
For a major utility, Beacon Energy conducted market research on several
potential opportunities for new business. Several of these were new product
opportunities, however others involved new service offerings or the
expansion of current businesses.

Renewable Energy Project Assistance
§
For an
investment holding company and/or a wind farm developer, Beacon Energy analyzed power prices available
for multiple wind farm development projects. Beacon Energy recommended power
contracting entities and assisted in the negotiations of a power purchase
agreement. In addition, Beacon Energy prepared a
financial investment proforma and solicited the additional investment of
participant companies.

Energy Consulting in International
Markets
§
For a U.S.
company interested in international investments, Beacon Energy analyzed
on-site generation alternatives and assisted in the financial evaluation of
a planned project. Beacon Energy presented the investment findings to a
variety of potential investors.
§
For a large
U.S. company, Beacon Energy conducted various country market and risk
assessments in Latin America. These assessments involved analyzing
geopolitical issues, country currency evaluations, and energy market
analyses. Presentations were prepared for the firm’s Board of Directors.
